Building your own free standing murphy bed can save drastically in cost and allows you to have a bed ready for any unexpected guest. Assemble 2 by 4 inches of boards to make the frame for the mattress. The upper and lower plates will be inside the side panels. Insert two screws into each corner joint. It must have a rectangle of 2 by 4 boards. Place one of the pieces of plywood on the frame, flush with the top edge. Insert 2-inch screws through the plywood into the 2-by-4 boards every 6 inches around the structure. Place the second piece of plywood and the screw in place. Screw 1 by 6 inches together to the plywood, which covers the line where the two pieces of plywood meet.

This adds stability and hides the joint. Flip the entire piece over and install the flat supports (repair). Space them evenly across the width of the bed and screw them in place with 1/2 inch screws.
